Boma

After a long day's walking on Day Two of the Whale Trail we were very happy to reach Noetsie camp on the coast. In the evening we sat around the fire in the boma, watching the waves. Here the guys turn to check out a baboon watching us from the top of the cliff.

Glad

We had a fantastic day's hiking on Day One of the Whale Trail! I dawdled at the back of the pack, taking lots of photos of the beautiful scenery and fynbos. The highlight was seeing this magnificent flower which I think is Gladiolus cardinalis.

Dirt Roads

Michele and I took a slow drive to De Hoop Nature Reserve today, on our way to the start of the Whale Trail. The last part of the journey was along quiet country roads through typical Overberg farmland. Aaaah, wide open space.

Checklists

Today was all about packing and planning, and long lists! This will be the first time I've done a multi-day hike and it's so hard to know what to take. Almost ready.

Ziplock

With just a couple of days to go til I walk the Whale Trail, it was time to shop and start organizing the food. Here: portions of muesli for breakfast, and dried fruit and droe wors in ziplock bags, for snacking. Sorted!

Dorothy and I went for lunch at the Porter Estate market in Tokai. We had delicious lamb burgers.

Shades

Hooray, for the first time in years I have prescription sunglasses again. I had new lenses put in my old frames, just in time for my hike (four more sleeps).

Ants!

Yesterday I heard a snippet on the radio saying that there are a lot of ants out and about in Cape Town at the moment, and their furious activity is a sign that we are in for a very wet winter. At the time I thought that's odd, I haven't seen any sign of ants for months. However when I arrived home this evening my patio was overrun. A column of ants were moving stuff (food? eggs?) from my neighbour, across my garden, out the gate and along the side of the building. So many ants, so very busy!

Caught in the Act

Tom was rampaging around this morning. He scampered along the top of the bookcase, nudging and knocking off all my ornaments. Chaos-causing critter.
