Every morning and evening my mom puts out worms for the flycatchers. Three of these sweet little birdies, two youngsters and the remaining parent bird, hop onto the table for their treats. If she's late they cheep-cheep-cheep to remind her. The other sorts of birds aren't forgotten either... seeds and fresh fruit also get put out in the garden. Watching and listening to the happy chatter while eating our own breakfast is a lovely way to start the day.

Your mom sounds like an extraordinary woman - I'm not sure I could bring myself to catching a whole lot of worms to feed the birds! :-D
ReplyDeleteBut I wholeheartedly agree with "listening to the happy chatter while eating our own breakfast is a lovely way to start the day."
Heh, my mom doesn't catch the worms - its worse (better?)... she breeds them! (Grows them? Cultivates them? - hmm, what's the right verb?). She has them in a large basin in the dark and feeds them bran and carrots. Its a particular type of worm of course. Apparently its all quite clean and civilized and the population is robust enough to withstand her taking out a small handful every day. I didn't investigate too closely cos, euww, worms!
ReplyDeleteThe birds love them though and they know her voice and are quite vociferous about asking for them. Today the cheekiest flycatcher took a worm out of her hand. Too cute!
Hahahaha - that's really funny! Your mom is clearly very resourceful, and must love her birds, if she goes to so much trouble to ... er... breed? worms for them.
ReplyDeleteAnd the birds sound amazingly tame - it must be magical to have one eating out of your hand!
