Turneresque

The sunset was beautiful this evening. The mountain looks so lovely and benign, but it has claimed two lives in as many weeks (a local and a tourist). It is easy to forget that it is a wild and dangerous place.

Word Nerd

Oh, I do love the internet! I was looking up the meaning of a work on Wikipedia, and ended up finding lists, lists and even more lists of fascinating words... eponyms, retronyms, backronyms...

Fog

I went down to Sea Point for a walk this afternoon, and a thick damp fog came in and it was really chilly. Autumn seems to be here at last, and it is wonderful.

Shark Alert

I spent the morning in Muizenberg. After my walk I met some friends who had been surfing. I think they were pretty brave (crazy?) to go into the water at all considering the red flag was flying!

Greedy Little Humans

Earth Hour 2011 happens today. I saw this sticker behind a signboard in Milnerton this afternoon. I have no idea why it's there or who Conduit Productions are but I can't argue with the sentiment. Hope the earth doesn't implode in 2011 either.

I received this choker as a gift several years ago but it took a while to become a favourite. Now I wear it often. I love the shell's lustre.

Mostly my garden isn't doing too well at the moment, but this little corner seems to be thriving. White abelia, purple tulbaghia and yellow and orange bulbinella in flower.

The Big Picture

I only found out about the terrible earthquake in Japan on Sunday evening, and since then have been following the story in the media, particularly here. What a devastating tragedy it is for all those affected.

Mine

As soon as I put it down yesterday Thomas made himself at home on my backpack. He was probably liking the fact that it was all grubby and stinky, but I like to think it it was because he was happy to have me home ;-)

Oystercatcher

We saw quite a few of these sea birds on Day Five of the Whale Trail. I'm sad the hike is over, but feeling inspired to do more long walks. Perhaps the next one should be the Oystercatcher Trail?

Happy Hikers

Day Four of the Whale Trail. Today the weather was perfect and everyone was having great fun on the hike. I really enjoyed walking along the beach, swimming in the sea and exploring the rock pools.

Cliff-top Path

Today, Day Three of the Whale Trail, was a trudge along the rocky coastline. The scenery was spectacular, which kept me going even though the body was tired. Such a beautiful part of the world.

Boma

After a long day's walking on Day Two of the Whale Trail we were very happy to reach Noetsie camp on the coast. In the evening we sat around the fire in the boma, watching the waves. Here the guys turn to check out a baboon watching us from the top of the cliff.

Glad

We had a fantastic day's hiking on Day One of the Whale Trail! I dawdled at the back of the pack, taking lots of photos of the beautiful scenery and fynbos. The highlight was seeing this magnificent flower which I think is Gladiolus cardinalis.

Dirt Roads

Michele and I took a slow drive to De Hoop Nature Reserve today, on our way to the start of the Whale Trail. The last part of the journey was along quiet country roads through typical Overberg farmland. Aaaah, wide open space.

With just a couple of days to go til I walk the Whale Trail, it was time to shop and start organizing the food. Here: portions of muesli for breakfast, and dried fruit and droe wors in ziplock bags, for snacking. Sorted!

Ants!

Yesterday I heard a snippet on the radio saying that there are a lot of ants out and about in Cape Town at the moment, and their furious activity is a sign that we are in for a very wet winter. At the time I thought that's odd, I haven't seen any sign of ants for months. However when I arrived home this evening my patio was overrun. A column of ants were moving stuff (food? eggs?) from my neighbour, across my garden, out the gate and along the side of the building. So many ants, so very busy!
